Tour Myron Hunt’s Architectural Gem on

Occidental College Campus, Sunday, November 3, 2019

Treasure Hunting at a Hunt Treasure Trove

The Oneonta Club Foundation is pleased to announce a rare opportunity to tour Architect Myron Hunt's historic buildings at Occidental College in Eagle Rock on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, from 1:30-3:00 pm. We are delighted to invite all to participate and enjoy.

Education is the primary philanthropic purpose of the Oneonta Club and its Foundation. We have been awarding college scholarships to South Pasadena High School seniors since 1955. This is the first Oneonta Club fundraiser open to the public to help continue that community service.

Although Myron Hunt’s monumental work abounds in Pasadena and Los Angeles, the nineteen existing Hunt-designed buildings at Occidental College (Oxy) represent the largest concentration of his architecture anywhere on the planet. Also, delightfully, his work at Oxy was in collaboration with renowned landscape architect, Beatrix Farrand.

In addition to the Occidental College campus, Myron Hunt designed scores of notable Southern California landmarks including several in this immediate area:

Valley Hunt Club, Pasadena (1907)

Throop University Campus Plan (1908); now Caltech

Huntington Mansion (Art Gallery), San Marino (1910)

Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles (1919-1921) demolished

Huntington Hotel, Pasadena (1914)

Huntington Library, San Marino (1919)

Rose Bowl, Pasadena (1922)

Pasadena Central Library (1924)

Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena (1940)

Beatrix Farrand, (1872 -1959) was one of eleven founders of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the only woman. Her career included commissions to design well over a hundred gardens for private residences, estates and country homes, public parks, botanic gardens, college campuses, and the White House.

This special event will feature a 45-minute review and discussion, indoors, of Hunt’s work and the importance of Farrand’s landscape design. Following the presentation and discussion, Stefanos Polyzoides, Odom Stamps, Jennifer Trotoux and Tom Polansky will lead a tour of four sites around the campus, including the new pool and tennis courts designed by tour leader Polyzoides.

We anticipate a high amount of interest, especially among the local historic preservation communities of Highland Park, Los Angeles, Pasadena and South Pasadena.  A limited number of tour tickets are now available for sale online ($35 each in advance, $40 day of the event):  https://www.oneontaclub.org/coming-events/historic-architecture-tour-at-occidental-college
