He served in the United States Navy for the remainder of the Civil War and left a diary of his experiences. The diary is distinguished not only by its details and eloquent tone, but also by its author’s reflections on the conduct of the war, on his own military engagements, on race, on race relations in the Navy and on what African Americans might expect after the war and during Reconstruction. This presentation promises to be inspiring and thought provoking.

2019.11 Dinner - Mark Goldstein & Teenagers in Disguise

The November 11, 2019 meeting began with a friendly social hour, as Odom Stamps served up this month’s signature beverage of “Hot Buttered Rum”, and we also enjoyed the wine served.

President Hubert Ho led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Pair Extraordinaire”, Gary Pia and Paul Kilian conducted us in the “Star Spangled Banner”.

Our guest, Pastor Sam Park of the South Pasadena ReNew United Methodist Church, gave the invocation.

A former stand-in for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show, (in jest) Steve Hennessee went to the mic for a light and looney Oneonta joke.

There’s no better way to welcome the Thanksgiving season than to gobble up and enjoy the Fresh Gourmet’s traditional turkey dinner. The dinner was a winner!

Our November birthday members, Gary Penn and Carl Von Bibra were serenaded enforce by the club.

Happiness is inducting the new members into the club and we welcomed, Glen Crawford, and Scott Moe, singing …”consider yourself one of us”.

Through our community sing of Veterans Day songs, we honored our veterans in the group and all American Veterans.

The November Chair, Gerry Poulin introduced his hard working, dedicated committee team members, Larry McGrail, Steve Henessee, Bruce Crum, Phil Putnam, Odom Stamps, Steve Tepe, and Henry Wong.

The speaker for the evening was Mark Goldstein, attorney, USC professor, and musician. He expounded on the complexities of the music industry’s “intellectual properties”.

Randy Rivera and company served up some Americana and Folk songs that everyone enjoyed. We especially relished his very own funny song the “Deadman”

Hubert wrapped up the meeting and encouraged us to keep inviting friends to our meetings.

2019.10 Dinner - Matthew Burlando & Winter River

The Oneonta Club meeting, held at the War Memorial Building on October 14, 2019, was an evening of good conversation, food and entertainment.  Since 1923, the members have gathered regularly.  The latest meeting included a speaker from Griffith Park Observatory and a duet who play the cello and guitar.

Matthew Burlando, who hails from South Pasadena and earned the rank of Eagle Scout from a troop in town, spoke about his work programing the computers and software that operate the exhibits, telescopes and planetarium at the observatory.  Matthew explained the nuances of keeping high-tech equipment running at a venue that brings astronomy to the people.   His slide presentation included photos of some impressive telescopes and planetarium projector.

The evening’s performance included Winter River, who played and sang self-written songs to close the evening.  The artists are Jane Kim and Aaron Therol: she plays the cello and is classically trained, while he plays the guitar and is self-taught.  Aaron and Jane have played at previous events in South Pasadena and elsewhere over the years.

2019.09 Dinner - Rob Freeman & Michael Sinatra

The September Oneonta meeting took off into the wild blue yonder on Monday September 9th, with an aviation themed program.  Rob Freeman, Lead Environmental Manager at Los Angeles International Airport talked about the environmental challenges associated with the airport’s multibillion dollar plans to accommodate millions of additional passengers in the next 20 years.

The evening continued with entertainment in keeping with LAX’s “jet setter” era with Rat Pack inspired songs by Michael Sinatra.  We even included the Air Force Theme song as one of our group sings!

The evening concluded with many “flight tests” of the table centerpieces (balsa wood and foam airplanes and gliders).  Hopefully we didn’t put anybody’s eye out!
